Retrospection on a Rainy Day

It is grey, foggy, rainy, and warmer than usual for late October.  Why is it that rainy days invite retrospection?  Sometimes this self-reflection brings greater understanding of yourself, your place in this world, and where you want to be.  Sometimes it just bums you out.

Filling out a survey to help my alma mater is what really brought my grey mood.  Facing the fact that I am so far from where I had wanted to be at this point in my life.  Then again, I have had to roll with life's punches and I think that I have done fairly well so far.

So maybe I will listen to the shush of the water as the cars go by and the patter of the rain on the sidewalk while I watch the drips race down my windows to puddle on the sill.  Waiting for the inner peace that retrospection can bring.

Take each day, come what may.

This is one of those phrases that at first seems trite, but as you think about it, you realize that triteness doesn't necessarily mean not relevant.

So many of us have our routines and plans, we go through our days almost on autopilot.  Even if you are a parent - there is usually some type of routine.  Often we forget to be aware of each moment and how temporary it could be.  As Burns once said "the best laid schemes of mice and men gang aft a-gley".

I am into Day 2 of plans a-gley.  Day one was a general Murphy day. So far on Day 2: both offspring have come down with strep throat during the night (thus they are not in school and I am not at work), I have cramps that could knock an elephant down, someone has AGAIN made off with my recycle bin, my washer and dryer have decided not to work, and my cat just urped up on the kitchen chair.

Therefore, I am left to find the best of each day in each small sunny moment that I can.  The sun breaking through the clouds to shine on my flower bed.  My cat stretching on the window sill.  The fresh sea breeze.  The call of the gulls.  A hug from my son.
